Steafán Hanvey is a photographer and artist from Northern Ireland based in Helsinki and working everywhere. Born in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, he is the eldest son of internationally acclaimed photographer Bobbie Hanvey. Steafán has learned his craft by osmosis. His da used to tell him that he was born in the darkroom, maybe he was. He used to stand on a milk crate to watch his da bring his photographs to life. He has recently produced and published a photo-poetry book, titled ‘Reconstructions, the Troubles in photographs and words’ where each of his poems act as a (part) response to each respective photograph taken by his da. One of the pieces (Late Developer) details time Steafán spent in the darkroom watching the night’s ‘catch’ come to life under the red light. As a child, Steafán would accompany his father on midnight adventures, watching him photograph the latest aftermath, all while his schoolmates were tucked up in their beds, fast asleep. He used to assist his father at various photo shoots, before working as a photographer himself for a local newspaper. Always a keen hobbyist, Steafán was recently inspired to pick up his camera again when his daughter and son were born and now once again, after a twenty year hiatus, he has started to take photographs professionally.
